Petition to Reverse Paulding County’s Property Tax/Mill-Rate Increase

August 19, 2010
By

PLEASE SHARE WITH AS MANY FELLOW PAULDING COUNTY RESIDENTS AS POSSIBLE!!! ALSO, SHOW UP TO THE PUBLIC HEARING THIS COMING TUESDAY, AUGUST 24TH, AT 10AM. KEEP PRESSING ON!

We, the undersigned, call on the Paulding County Board of Commissioners to roll the County M&O Mill-rate back to 6.65 mills. We believe that a 31% reserve is sufficient enough to end the 2011 Fiscal Year with and disagree with the August 10th vote to raise the mill-rate to 7.60 by commissioners David Austin, Tommie Graham, and Wayne Kirby. The increased mill-rate is not necessary to meet the 2011 fiscal year budget as proposed by Commissioner Chair David Austin. This mill-rate increase is essentially over-collecting property taxes and allows the Board of Commissioners to avoid having to justify their budgets in future years.

These signatures will be hand-delivered to the Board of Commissioners during the Tuesday, August 24th Public Forum.

The state of a nation's economy is normally a reflection of the average citizen's personal economy. With so many of us simply working and trying to hold on to what we have, there is barely enough available to maintain ANY reserve, much less increase it. Government should remember where there powers come from, who they represent, and most importantly, that they too, are STILL individual citizens, and peers of the constituency. When the people struggle to keep the fires burning at home, the government should not, under any circumstance, attempt to obtain any additional funds from the people. Property is devalued. Let the lower values BENEFIT the PEOPLE during this rough economic time. Roll back the rate increase TODAY.

Has everyone looked at the Dallas New Era Legal Notices at how very many people have lost their homes to forclosure? The ones that are still hanging on to their property cannot afford a millage rate tax increase! Cut your budget more starting with cutting out Commissioner salaries! They don't earn it anyway. They do what they want to do and never listen to the people that put them in office anyway! Commissioners had better listen to the Paulding residents! Elections are not that far away and we will remember you!!!

As it is, next year all Americans will face the biggest tax increase in American history. Increasing the millage rate in Paulding County puts further burdens on already struggling Paulding County residents and adds insult to injury. It also makes Paulding County even less competitive in the housing market. Roll back the millage rate and cut spending!

Taking money from the people to support irresponsible government just makes us poorer and the government MORE IRRESPONSIBLE. I see wasteful things happening in government often. Some of the citizens of the City of Hiram are very upset that property value appeared "pumped up" for the construction of the townhome units located next to Hiram Elementary (which should have never been allowed), as well as the proposed new subdivision located joining my property located on Seaboard Avenue. This subdivision never materialized but one home, but created many stressfull wearing conditions that were/are not acceptable. When these were not a "hit" the property values started the decline! It did not take a rocket scientist to figure "why" values jumped and then declined!

You need to rune this county on a budgetlike we do our homes. Budget means "A PLAN FOR SYSTEMATIC SPENDING"!! Don't spend what you don't have! Maybe you need to think about moving to South Alabama and see if your system works????

Tax increases are a way to justify bad money handling. There is something that can be cut to make the budget. You don't need more of my money, your not spending what you have wisely. On top of it all raising taxes in an economic slump is a good way to chase off those who would otherwise stay and pay into the public coffer.

The tax payers of this county have provided more than enough additional funds for budgets that included wasteful spending. We are told to balance our budgets with what we make now - I urge this county to do the same. If you can't afford what you have - cut the fat, don't bleed the people dry. Many of us have lost businesses, jobs and too many even their homes. How can you watch the destruction of so many lives and then further the burden with a tax increase? You are elected to be our voice - so please hear us now. We no longer want to pay for budgets that include county vehicles being used for personal use - when the citizens can barely afford the high gas prices for their own vehicles, we no longer want to pay for "plush" government offices - while citizens are losing their homes, we no longer want to pay for the needless waste - when too many have lost their jobs and have no income at all. This is too great a burden to ask of the citizens to absorb. Please remember the job each of you were elected to is to serve the people. Please hear the people and be our voice.

I remember a past commissioner that raised taxes and he doesn't seem to be there anymore. I hope we don't have another one of the same. The budget was balanced and now all of the sudden you raised the taxes on us. More of the same. I struggle to pay what I have with furlough days on top of it but needless to say the citizens of Paulding do not have a say and not considered when it came to a vote. I wonder what lavish item is on the agenda next after bleeding us dry. We shall soon see. On the backs of homeowners again. Pretty soon there will be very few homeowners and then what?

16 Responses to Petition to Reverse Paulding County’s Property Tax/Mill-Rate Increase

  1. Gary Fox on August 20, 2010 at 11:02 am

I would like to see legislation passed by the State that would take away the power of raising millage rates from the County Boards of Commissioners. Millage rate increases should be placed on a ballot for the voters to decide. Property value caps should also be in place so that property taxes cannot be raised on the whims of a BoC.

    Meg Hunt-Williams Reply:

If the taxpayers are required to “pay the bills”, then it is the right of the “taxpayers” to make the decisions regarding Millage rates.

Is this not supposed to be a Government of the People, By the People, and For the People?

    Patrick Woodall Reply:

I would vehemently and ferociously oppose any legislation that grants legislative and tax authority of far away government (41 miles away) over a local government that is 15 minutes from my house. The State has exhibited time and time again their inability to manage budgets as well. Look at the state DOT. no thank you. Bad idea…

Happy to help with the petition. I’ve received over 50 signatures today. Citizens of Paulding are tired of the excess spending. Our Commisioners need to hear us. Small business are closing, most are struggling. Buisness & home owners have cut budgets. Payrolls have reduced & now it’s time for OUR government to stop taking more. Please everyone share with your neighbors & friends. Sign the petition & join everyone Aug 24 @ 10 to present our request for rolling back the millage rate.

If the taxes would go aid the salary for our law enforcement that a different story, not just to put a lot of money in the bank. What purpose would that serve?

Our taxes just keep going up, up, up, while our values keep going down, down, down. I appealed my taxes because all values on my street dropped except mine. The Board told me that my place was worth more than I stated. I tried to sell and the same board told the people that was interested that it wasn’t worth what I was asking. If I knew which one at the court house said that and killed my sell, I would sue him, her, it or whatever and the county. I’m discusted with all of our so called county officials along with all the appointed rif-raf up there! An appointed position should not be a life time job……………We need new blood up there!
